Salmonid Coalition

The Sonoma County Water Agency is participating in the Salmonid Coalition, and is hosting this web page to provide information about the group to the public. The Salmonid Coalition is comprised of a variety of organizations that represent a broad range of interests including agencies, public entities, private stakeholders, and members of the conservation/environmental community.

Salmonid Habitat Restoration and Enhancement Alexander and Dry Creek Valleys, Russian River Watershed

Mission Statement:

The mission of the Salmonid Coalition is: to protect and enhance existing habitat, and to restore historic habitat; to promote the recovery and maintenance of salmonid fish populations in the Alexander, Dry Creek and Knights Valleys of the Russian River Watershed; and to create sustainable partnerships, both public and private that allow property owners, public agencies and conservation groups the ability to contribute to these efforts while balancing the need to provide for regional economic viability and regulatory certainty.

Goals:

  • Identify the root causes of habitat degradation within the Watershed
  • Identify specific practices which can be changed or eliminated and Best Management Practices that can be implemented to address the root causes of habitat degradation
  • Develop a community outreach and education program to inform landowners and land managers about the potential impacts of land management practices and the benefits of implementing Best Management Practices.
  • Identify specific watershed and in-stream demonstration projects for salmonid, and other native species, habitat protection, restoration and enhancement.
  • Identify projects that contribute to the recovery of the salmon populations that are proportional to individual stakeholder impacts
  • Identify criteria for recovery and the collective, comprehensive measures that will meet that criterion
  • Identify watershed management actions that promote, and are not deleterious to, salmon populations
  • Provide conservation benefits that without this partnership could not be achieved. If the benefits result in a quantifiable positive conservation outcome, then private and public stakeholders will seek regulatory certainty. Regulatory certainty may include removal of the Alexander. Dry Creek and Knights Valley from critical habitat designation or provide other forms of assurance that performance of the conservation strategy will constitute compliance with the Endangered Species.
  • Utilizing best available science, provide for ongoing research and an Adaptive Management mechanism
  • Identify appropriate funding sources
  • Strengthen and cultivate partnerships
