Stream Maintenance Program

Santa Rosa Creek Trail Closures to Begin July 21

Starting July 21 the Sonoma County Water Agency will be thinning vegetation and making other improvements along Santa Rosa Creek between Stony Point Road and Willowside Road in order to enhance flood conveyance capacity and to promote a larger and more diverse riparian corridor. Multi-trunk species, such as arroyo willows, will be selectively thinned and removed in order to promote more upright, larger-growing, single-trunk species such as alder and Oregon ash. By selectively managing these species, a larger riparian corridor will develop that shades the creek, provides better capacity during floods and stabilizes stream banks. Trees will also be planted this winter in order to help establish, or fill in, areas that are sparse.

For public safety, it will be necessary to close the trail where Agency staff is working. The work progression is expected to be as follows:

1) Stony Point Road to Fulton Road-south trail – July 21-August 8
2) Stony Point Road to Fulton Road-north trail – August 11-August 29
3) Fulton Road to Willowside Road-south trail- September 1-September 19
4) Fulton Road to Willowside Road-north trail- September 22-October 10

Work is expected to take approximately 3-4 weeks for each segment as noted above. The work hours and trail closures will be between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
