The Sonoma Valley County Sanitation District's Sonoma Valley Treatment Plant is the largest of seven wastewater treatment plants operated by the Sonoma County Water Agency. With over 120 miles of gravity sewer lines the plant serves the greater Sonoma area, extending northwest to Glen Ellen. SVTP is an extended aeration activated sludge plant with an ADWF of 3 MGD. This 1996 photo is used to illustrate the District's significant capital improvements program. Improvements made over the past five years include:

Sonoma Valley Treatment Plant Overview

  1. Lining of all four storm-flow equalization basins.
  2. Construction of two new chlorine contact chambers and the demolition of the old chamber.
  3. Replacement of course bubble diffusers with fine bubble tube diffusers.
  4. Replacement of four rectangular traveling bridge clarifiers with two circular clarifiers including the demolition of the old clarifiers, old defunct primary tanks, trickling filter, and dewatering pad.
  5. Headworks upgrade which consists of the addition of a third traveling filter screen, the replacement of all four influent pumps, the addition of a fifth influent pump, and the replacement and demolition of the old conventional aerated grit chamber with a Pista grit chamber.

Capital improvements currently in construction include aeration automation with the demolition of old defunct digestors and the construction of a new 265-acft reservoir and pump station in the reclamation system. Capital improvements currently in design include tertiary filtration with chlorination-dechlorination improvements and an upgrade of plant power systems with the replacement of the emergency generator.
